DESCRIPTION:
Set within the courtyard of the Equinox Apartments, the concierge pavilion draws its form from both name and site. Eastlake’s 12.5-degree deviation from true north aligns with the tilt of the earth at the equinox, and this geometry is translated directly into the building—rotated in plan and inclined in section. The result is a calibrated object that acts as a spatial compass, registering orientation, movement, and time while establishing a strong sculptural presence within the courtyard.
The sectional tilt resolves a four-foot elevation change, embedding an accessible path that unifies ramp and stair into a single shared circulation sequence. This continuous route connects the sidewalk to the apartments and concierge space without hierarchy, allowing all users to move through the same spatial experience. Surrounding the pavilion, a level water plane contrasts with the shifting geometry of the structure, reinforcing the perception of true horizontal against the inclined form.
Constructed as a lightweight, glass enclosure inspired by greenhouse systems, the pavilion houses a compact interior volume for concierge functions, waiting, and tenant use. A concrete base anchors the structure, integrating ramps, stairs, and landings, while a paver field extends outward, its grid aligned with the geometry of the tilted form. The project operates as both infrastructure and instrument—simultaneously resolving access, organizing movement, and expressing the subtle but precise relationship between earth, orientation, and built form.
